Bob Ross

It is with great sorrow that HogBlog announces that Bob Ross, host of PBS's 'The Joy of Painting', famed for his happy little clouds and happy little trees, his afro and his tranquilising voice, has been dead since 1995. His paintings may not have been great, but he was so soothing to watch...

HogBlog always believed his dedication to happiness and serenity was due to severe trauma suffered during Vietnam, but this appears not to be the case. It just goes to show.

You just realized this?

I've been a little out of touch these last few years. I've missed a lot. Men fly about through the air in great ships, like birds! And there are ways of projecting pictures, moving pictures, through the air, to appear on little boxes. And Fermat's Last Theorem has been proven. Truly, this is an age of miracles.

On the 4th of July 1995, Bob Ross died at an age of 52. The cause of his happy little death was cancer.

I have watched Bob Ross on PBS ever ssince he first aired. I think he was and ccontinues to be the most wonderful artist I have have ever had the previlage to see. I was greatly saddened to hear of his death. We all share a great loss. I will continue to follow his art shows as long as they are on PBS or any other station.

Why couldn't it have been Senator John Kerry, or Al Gore, Howard Dean, Bill or Hilary Clinton? Unlike the aforementioned jerks, Bob Ross will live on in our memories for many years to come.

Bob was the most sencere person. I have been watching his episodes for years. I learn new technique from each episode. He is fun to watch...
I am following his techniques in my paintings and I am improving every time I complete a painting.
Bob Thanks A million, You will always be in our hearts and memories for generations to come...
We miss your voice and laughs, BEAT THE DEVIL..

To Bob Ross: Thank you for helping me find the
Joy of Tranquility and Peace when I watch your show. You are still alive as far as I'm concerned.

I worked with Bob Ross while in the AIRFORCE and stationed with him in Fairbanks,Alaska in 1969-70. He was an administrative Sgt and I was a medic. He was a fine and gentle person as he portrayed later on his tv show. I had a paperwork problem associated with a promotion I was striving for....he wrote a letter which cleared up the confusion and was a big help in getting me my extra stripe. He gave me a piece of his pre-famous art back then( a wilderness scene-log cabin by a lake with mountains and northern lights-winter scene...on velvet on a goldpan)when he used to sell his work to the local shops. This goldpan has been hanging on my walls for over 30 years now. I did'nt realize he was the same Bob Ross until recently. A very nice guy....God now has a very good artist on duty up there!!!!!!!!!

his shows were broadcasted in turkey in late 80's (i guess 88, 89) and i had the privelage of watching him. it was a happy 30 minutes and i wished it never ended. today somehow i learned that he died back in 95. it felt terrible, and i am really sorry...

The Joy of Painting can now (2004) be seen all over western Europe via Astra satellites on the german channel BR-Alpha.
(The programme is, of course, in english. WhoŽd dare dub that guy??)

The dates and times can be seen here:
http://www.br-online.de/kultur-szene/sendungen/joyofpainting/index.xml

Subtract 2 hours from the starting time to get UTC/GMT.

Where it sez "täglich nachts" there is no time stated, but the programme is usually on at night at around 23:00 UTC/GMT.

Great to see so many Bob fans on the web...Bob's JOP show airs weekday mornings at 9am in the UK on Discovery Home and Leisure channel. I love Bob so much I formed the UK FRIENDS OF BOB ROSS SOCIETY last year and took up painting after Bob told me 'you can do this'..he was right and the thrill of producing an 18x12 double primed pre stretched canvas with a beautiful landscape scene on it, is a wonderful feeling. Especially when family and friends can't believe you've done it!

Blog comments are an amazing transformational force, dear HogBlog. Through this medium, your unassuming blog has been transformed into what I believe to be the primary message board for Bob Ross fans to share information and memories. Astounding! Bravo!

I've just come to know Bob and his happy little world on British satellite TV. I enjoy his shows greatly and was greatly saddedned to hear of his death back in 1995. He feels like part of the family and has inspired my painting.
Thanks Bob

BOb was my hero and I am forever saddened by his death.

I am NOT DEAD!!!!! I have only escaped the lime light of T.V. for a while and plan to make my return in late 2005.

Posted by: Bob Ross on May 6, 2004 12:42 PM

Thanks Bob, I now work as a full time artist in Ireland and am forever greatful for the pleasure and inspiration you gave me. Not just in painting style, but more importantly in your attitude to life, to share ones skills with others, to encourage begginers to pick up a brush and make their dream of being able to paint come true. Your deeply missed Bob, but your memory live on forever. Rob

Hey, wanna know what turns my stomach? Well I'll tell you anyway!! All those websites devoted to tearing down and making fun of the best painter that ever lived. Bob Ross gave to many of us (YES ME TOO) the encouragement to achieve what most can only dream. Therefore they have to insult and decharecterize an individual who did not set the bar too high so as not to overwhelm those just venturing into the rhelm of the painting world. If those who critisize shamelesly took the time to look beyond that half hour once a week he shared out of his life with us they'd see the work he did off camera, and know infact that his paintings were far more than "Happy Little Trees" and such. I take great pride in saying to those who love the paintings I accomplish that this is the result of my idol "BOB ROSS"s encouragement. And Guess what? They too are inspired after I tell them Bob always said "You can do it! I know you can" By the way after 8 years I have 22 paintings to my credit and this is from a woman who could not paint a "happy little tree" in her life. So in closing, For those of you who have nothing better to do than to belittle a great man I suggest you take Mr. Ross's advice and pick up a paint brush and see just how infectous it is and then stand back look at what you created and then let's hear what you have to say! :IN MY WORLD BOB IS DEARLY MISSED:

Irreplaceable. Will dearly be missed by many. Oh well....back to my xanax.

Bob Ross kept me company while recovering from by pass surgery in November of 1995. I can't remember seeing him complete one painting. His voice would put me to sleep not more than fifteen minutes into the show.
I met up with Bob again in 2000 when I had back surgery and again in 2003 when my back sidelined me for the final time and ended my working days for good. This time I paid attention and started to paint. When I found out Bob had passed I was shocked.I was told by one of his students he died of throat cancer and another by a brain tumor.
Sometime this summer I will travel to New Smyrna Beach to visit the workshop and museum. I will know then what took this gentleman from our presence. It's hard to believe had he lived we would be the same age today. God bless all the friends of Bob Ross and those who keep his memory alive.
Bill

What exact cancer did he die from? throat, brain tumor, there arent any real clear answers, are there?

Posted by: Guest on June 14, 2004 11:39 AM

Bob is currently been shown in England and I love him. I too was upset to learn that he had died. What a waste!
He has got me all fired up to start painting again after stopping so long ago. I have just ordered 80 canvasses. So Bob? if you are listening, thank you for showing me the way out of my misery. I have done 8 so far and they are stacking up and I have so many ideas in my head.
What a lovely man.
