At one time, for some reason I can't begin to recall now, I thought that physicist blogger Chad Orzel was the person behind Fafblog. No matter. He's reposted some advice for new faculty, most of which is an account of what teaching college is like for him. Read it. I may not be faculty yet, but this is uncannily like my experience teaching so far, especially the course I taught this summer. I'd have ideas for my next lecture on the bus, in the shower, in my sleep. I'd come out of good lectures feeling like I was all hyped up on crack and ready to take over the world. And when my students said something nice, it was like Christmas, only pleasant.
Speaking of which, one of my students made me some fan art.

And before you get any ideas, I'm befriending that octopus, not being horribly devoured. That octopus, who has some very attractive leopard-print suckers, actually feeds on sharks. His name is Claude.
She also drew this magical vampyre unicorn who loves Gauss.
The students really can be the best thing about the job.
